Round Table 3:
Open Discussion for Sua TERASIA

The second pillar of Sua TERASIA’s program, The Table: Reflecting and Discussing, will continue in Sua TERASIA Episode 2, which will take place in October 2024. Based on the discussions in Round Tables 1 and 2 in Jakarta, we will hold an open discussion with students, faculty, and the general public at ISBI (Indonesian Institute of Arts and Culture) Bandung, home to many artists and is at the intersection of diverse artistic practices and academic research.

In Bandung, which has different cultural infrastructure and creative ecosystems from Jakarta, we will open a space for free dialogue by sharing TERASIA’s practices and ideas, and to collectively look for the seeds of questions that would be explored in Sua TERASIA Episode 2.

Dr. Retno Dwimarwati

Retno Dwimarwati has studied theater since 1984 and has joined theater groups in Bandung, including Studiklub Teater Bandung and Actors Unlimited. Starting her theater art education at ASTI (before becoming ISBI) Bandung, earning a diploma in 1989, she then earned a bachelor’s degree at STSI (before becoming ISI) Surakarta (1991). Next, she continued her master’s studies at Gadjah Mada University (1996) before pursuing a doctorate at Padjadjaran University (2014). Her dedication to the performing arts drove her to become a lecturer in the Theater Department at ISBI Bandung, which has led her to become rector of the said university. Her published works include “The Elaboration of Goro-Goro in Wayang Play of Theater Koma: A Case Study of Riantiarno’s Play Semar Gugat and Republik Bagong” (2016) and “The Artistic Design of Maaf-maaf' by Teater Koma” (2015). She was also involved in the research for the Preservation of Village Culture Advancement Documents (DPKD) in Karyasari Village, Garut, under the DIPA ISBI Bandung Grant (2021).

Fathul Anshori

Fathul A. Husein was born in Majalengka, 1970. He is a theater director and a co-founder of the theater groups: ACTORS UNLIMITED (director, 2000-2011) and NEO Theater Indonesia (director, 2012-present). He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Theatre, STSI Bandung (now ISBI Bandung), in 1997 and a Master’s degree in Visual Arts at ITB in 2011. He has directed more than 30 theater performances since 2000 and has written art essays, especially theater criticism, in the mass media and books. He also translates and adapts foreign plays, including “Ibu Pemberani dan Anak-anaknya yang Mati” (Mother Courage and Her Children, Bertolt Brecht), “Yang Berdiam dalam Marahnya Sunyi” (The Intruder, Maurice Maeterlinck), and “Kembara Kelam” (Long Days Journey into Night, Eugene O'Neill) with Indrie Setya Lestari. He represented Indonesia in the SCOT Summer Season: Asian Theater Director's Festival 2017 at Toga Art Park, Toyama, Japan. This Chair of the ISBI Bandung Theater Department is also the recipient of the Artistic Achievement Award & Commendation as a Theater Director in the SCOT Summer Season: Asian Theater Director's Festival 2017 and the Bandung City Cultural Award 2021.

Kaku Nagashima

A pioneering dramaturg in Japan, Kaku Nagashima has worked with a wide range of directors and choreographers. He translated plays by Samuel Beckett and other modern and contemporary playwrights. Recent years he got interested in bringing theatrical ideas and techniques out of the theatre to the town and takes actively part in art projects. He was appointed director of Festival/Tokyo from 2018 to 2020; one of the directors of Tokyo Festival from 2021 to 2023. He teaches dramaturgy and curatorial practice in the performing arts at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Yustiansyah Lesmana

Yustiansyah Lesmana is a performing arts director, videographer, and visual programmer based in Jakarta. He works with Teater Ghanta, an open collaboration platform for performing arts. He is also one of the initiators of the performance studies collective Koridor Miring (Slanted Corridor). His works have been performed in various regions in Indonesia as well as in several international forums. Since 2017 he has been interested in working on models of transregional/national artistic collaboration. He has been involved in the Indonesian Dramaturgy Council and was invited to direct a collaborative project for young Asian artists at the 2017-2018 Asia Performing Arts Forum (APAF). Tian has been active with TERASIA since 2022. His art projects are diverse collaborations between artists across disciplines, regions, media, and generations. He received the award of Best Director by the Jakarta Arts Council in 2013 and 2014 at the Jakarta Theatre Festival. He currently works in the Theater Committee and Archives and Collections Commission of the Jakarta Arts Council.
