What is TERASIA?
TERASIA: Theatre for Traveling in the Age of Isolation is a collaborative project between international artists that launched in 2020 in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It grew out of Tera, a theatre piece designed to be performed in temples. Artists across Asia have recreated it into the TERA series, with each piece exploring spirituality, beliefs, and views on life and death in today’s world.
This year, we are presenting TERASIA Online Week 2021, a fully online mini-festival. Over ten days, we will release recordings of performances and talk sessions featuring artists based in Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia.
The Rainbow Hides Unseen?
Welcome to TERASIA Online Week 2021!
This fully online mini-festival will take place in late November. In the ancient Japanese calendar, which divided the year into seventy-two microseasons, this time of year is known as “the rainbow hides unseen,” for it is rare to see rainbows in the weak sunlight and dry air. At the moment, we have come through long months of living with the pandemic. For many of us, our everyday lives are slowly regaining some semblance of normality, though accompanied by drastic changes that we would never before have imagined. It’s difficult to see into the future, to see hope, or to see our connections with people and the world in all its vibrant diversity. When we seek those dimly lit rainbows in the sky, the clouds loom low; they disappear as soon as we catch sight of them. Perhaps this is a season for us to share this sense of faint, fleeting light.
Art enables us to encounter things that are hidden from view. In this space of creation where anything can happen—where it is perfectly plausible for the dead and the otherworldly to suddenly start talking to us—we can believe in the existence of the “invisible.” Amidst all the noise in the rapidly changing world around us, and although we are separated by distance, TERASIA has been continuing our collaboration to build a bridge to the other side of this world.
While waiting for the weather to change, we will have ten days of connecting, appreciating, and being amused across borders and through the screen. We hope that you will join us, and look forward to seeing you!
How to Enjoy TERASIA Online Week 2021
On this TERASIA Online Week 2021 website, artists based in Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Indonesia will share the process and the fruits of their creative endeavours.
１For first-time visitors, we recommend watching the Opening Talk from each team, entitled “Traveling in the Age of Isolation – Where Are We Now?” You’ll hear about what the creators across Asia have been thinking about and what they’re doing right now, with pictures and anecdotes from each presenter.
After that, you are welcome to wander around the website by browsing the program pages, enjoying performances, talks, and essays by any team which piques your interest.
*TERA in Kyoto and TERA เถระ are paid content. Online ticket fees will support the artists who created the work.
３ The Online Week will conclude with Indonesia, where our goal is to hold the TERASIA Summit there in 2023. In the closing talk, we will exchange various ideas and share our hopes for the future of TERASIA.
